Batán Silva

Batán Silva (Sebastián Gaetano Silva Beard) is a filmmaker by trade and a painter by circumstance. Born in 1964 in Mexico City, Silva bypassed film school to learn on set, eventually becoming a premier first assistant Director managing the complex logistics and creative execution for directors such as James Cameron (Titanic), Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Babel), Terrence Malick (To the Wonder), and Julian Schnabel (Before Night Falls). He was soon directing high-end television, helming episodes of The Boys, The Flight Attendant, The Sinner with Bill Pullman, and Law & Order: SVU. He has also directed five independent films, including El viaje de la Nonna and La nave. When the pandemic halted the collaborative machinery of making movies, Silva turned to the solitude of the canvas. What began as a lockdown emotional need evolved into a disciplined practice, his art reflecting a visceral, private language developed when the world went quiet and the only thing left to do was painting.
